Silk Draperies

Q: Why silk draperies?

A: Silk is fashionable, it’s elegant and it adds warmth to any room. Silk drapery has been in style for some time and doesn’t appear to be leaving. It gives your drapery a sheen that can’t be achieved by any other thread.

Q: What alternatives are there to silk drapery?

A: If you want to achieve a similar look, polyester is a great choice. It generally retails for less per yard. Many companies such as Robert Allen, Kravet and Maxwell Fabrics are using fabrics from mills that have come a long way in making faux silk. However, there’s something about silk that is unique and interesting. It’s a natural fibre and each yard of silk from the same bolt, can have variances in it. You can see slubs and what will sometimes look like a flaw, but it’s simply part of the beauty of silk.

Q: So if I want a “smooth as silk”  look, what should I choose?

A: The best way to achieve a smoother look with your silk is to choose a taffeta silk. This is a silk that looks much like a ball gown or a fancy dress.

Dupioni silk has fine lines in it. Silk drapery may not be for everyone, as it tends to be bossy and can at times look crushed.

The warmth of your hand can easily round out any crushes or wrinkles. Place one hand on the front of the drapery panel and one on the back and starting at the top, simply slide your hands down the panel, smoothing as you go.

Q: What’s the best way to care for my silk draperies?

A: Being a natural fibre, silk must be protected from direct contact with the sun. Choosing an appropriate lining is essential for silk draperies. For most, I add an interlining of flannel. This gives the drapery a fuller, softer shape. Silk fabric has a shorter life span than some other fabrics, which is ok and means I’ll get to see you again!
